Snacks from Myanmar
Myanmar snacking is laphet thoke, pickled tea leaves tossed with nuts, sesame, and tomatoes, eaten as a crunchy salad-snack. Mont let hsaung, sago in coconut milk with syrup, is a heat cup. Semolina cake (sanwin makin), jaggery, and palata. Tea shops serve bao and namya. This is pickled tea as a snack, not a British cup, and not a Thai mango sticky rice transplant.

Tea is a salad
Laphet is fermented tea, oily, pungent, tossed with crunchy fried beans and nuts. It is the snack that cannot be pasted onto Yunnan or Assam without lying. Tea shops in Yangon are social offices: bao, namya, a pot, hours. Sanwin makin is the semolina square, coconut and jaggery, a cake that is also a nibble.
Mont let hsaung and shwe yin aye are coconut-milk cups for hot months. Palata is the roti cousin. Pack vacuum laphet and jaggery. Salad mixed with tomato is same-hour.
