Snacks from Spain

Spanish snacking is a bar counter: a pincho, a handful of olives, a croissant from the panadería at merienda. Turrón owns Christmas. Churros con chocolate are a morning or late-night event. The country eats small, often, and standing up, then pretends it was not a meal. Jamón is not candy, but it is absolutely a snack.

What to try first

The bar is a snack operating system

You stand. You eat something on bread. You drink a small beer or a coffee. Pintxos in Donostia turned this into an art; the rest of Spain just does it with a tortilla wedge. This is snacking as social infrastructure.

Christmas is a nougat season

Turrón from Jijona and Alicante, polvorones from Estepa, mazapán from Toledo. The boxes appear in November and occupy living rooms until Reyes. If you visit in July, you will still find turrón because Spain never fully puts it away.

Merienda is real

A pastry or bread at 6 p.m. because dinner is at 10. Magdalenas, a bikini sandwich, or leftover tortilla. Kids get Cola Cao. Adults get another coffee.

How people snack

Olives without thinking. Churros when celebrating or hungover. Chips with beer. Travelers should buy turrón even off-season and eat churros sitting down at least once, because the chocolate is a sauce, not a garnish.
