Snacks from Hungary

Hungarian snacking is a lángos, fried dough with sour cream and cheese, and túró rudi, the chocolate-coated curd bar from every fridge. Kürtőskalács, chimney cake, is a fairground spiral of sugar. Pogácsa cheese biscuits live in bakeries. Dobos and Somlói are cakes that become leftover slices. Szaloncukor is Christmas. Unicum is a drink. This is fried dough and a curd bar, not a paprika lecture.

What to try first

The spa snack is fried

Lángos after swimming is a Budapest habit: dough, garlic, tejföl, cheese. It is not pizza. Túró rudi is the other habit, a fridge bar of túró (curd) in chocolate, eaten on MÁV trains. Kürtőskalács is the Transylvanian-Hungarian spiral that tourists found; it is still a real sugar crust when the stall rotates it over charcoal.

Pogácsa is the savory bakery. Szaloncukor is the Christmas foil. Pack pogácsa and, if you have a cold bag, túró rudi. Lángos is a plate. Do not paste a Czech chimney-cake rant here; Hungarians actually eat kürtőskalács at fairs, and the curd bar is the grocery tell.
