Snacks from Germany

Germany snacks with a kind of engineering pride: Haribo invented the gummi bear here, Ritter Sport is a square on purpose, and a Bahlsen Leibniz biscuit still tastes like a school bag. Bakeries sell belegte Brötchen as a legitimate afternoon; Christmas brings Spekulatius and Lebkuchen that outrank most chocolate bars. It is orderly, it is excellent, and it is heavier than it looks.

What to try first

Haribo is a hometown story

Hans Riegel started in Bonn. The gummi bear is German industrial design applied to gelatin. The rest of the world copied the shape; Germany kept iterating flavors and still treats a bag of Goldbears as ordinary, not novelty. Licorice is more popular here than in the US, which is why the aisle looks darker.

Chocolate as a pocket tool

Ritter Sport’s square is a slogan and a fact: it fits. Milka and the supermarket house bars cover the everyday. Seasonal bars with Spekulatius spice blur the line between biscuit tin and chocolate aisle every winter.

The bakery is the savory half

A German ‘snack’ is often a cheese roll, a pretzel, or a slice of buttercake. You eat it standing at a high table in the Hauptbahnhof. That is as central as candy. Ignore it and you only get the gummi story.

How people snack

Kaffee und Kuchen still exists on weekends. Weekdays are bakery rolls and a Ritter. Advent is a tin of biscuits that never fully closes. Kids get Haribo. Hikers get trail chocolate. The portions are honest; the spice level at Christmas is not shy.

Questions about snacks from Germany

What snacks is Germany known for?

Haribo gummi bears, Ritter Sport, Leibniz biscuits, and Christmas Lebkuchen. Soft pretzels and bakery rolls are the savory half of the story.

Were gummi bears invented in Germany?

Yes. Haribo in Bonn created the Goldbear. The gummi category still has a German accent even when the bag is made elsewhere.

What should I buy at a German bakery?

A belegtes Brötchen or a pretzel for now, and a slice of buttercake if you want sweet. Candy is for the supermarket.

What German sweets travel well?

Haribo, Ritter Sport, packed Lebkuchen, and Spekulatius. Soft pretzels and cream cakes do not.
